Violet: A Handwritten Font for Modern Web Design
I was working on a rebranding project for a boutique online store that sells handmade skincare products. The goal was to create a more authentic and inviting digital presence, one that felt personal and trustworthy. As I explored font options, I stumbled upon Violet—a slim and delicate handwritten font that immediately caught my eye.
Violet has a soft, organic feel with subtle flourishes in each character. It’s not overly ornate but carries enough personality to stand out. The characters have a natural flow, as if they were written by hand, which gives the font a sense of charm and authenticity. This made it a perfect fit for the brand’s voice—handcrafted, gentle, and approachable.
One of the first places I tested Violet was in the hero section of the homepage. I placed it over a full-width image of a product in use, with a short headline that read “Gentle Care, Naturally.” The font paired beautifully with the warm tones of the background, and the readability was surprisingly good, even at a larger size. I noticed how the slight variation in stroke thickness helped the text pop without overwhelming the visual composition.
Next, I considered using Violet for section headings throughout the site. It worked well for titles like “Our Story” and “Handmade with Love,” adding a touch of elegance while keeping the overall layout clean and modern. However, I avoided using it for body copy or long paragraphs. Handwritten fonts can be challenging for dense blocks of text, especially on smaller screens. Instead, I used a complementary sans serif font for the main content to ensure legibility and maintain a professional tone.
For call-to-action buttons, I experimented with a few variations. While Violet could work for short phrases like “Shop Now” or “Explore Our Collection,” I found that using a bold sans serif font on top of Violet created a nice contrast and improved click-through rates. It added a layer of hierarchy without sacrificing the brand’s aesthetic.
When designing for mobile, I paid close attention to how Violet scaled. At smaller sizes, the details in the letters became less defined, so I adjusted the font size and spacing to keep it readable. I also made sure there was enough contrast between the text and background, especially when placing it over images. Using a semi-transparent overlay helped maintain legibility without compromising the visual appeal.
Font pairing played a big role in this project. I paired Violet with a clean, modern sans serif like Montserrat for body text and navigation menus. This combination gave the site a balanced look—Violet brought warmth and personality, while Montserrat provided clarity and structure. It’s a great example of how combining a decorative display font with a simple base font can enhance both aesthetics and usability.
I also thought about where else Violet could be used beyond the website itself. For social media graphics, it worked well for captions and promotional banners. On the packaging design for their physical products, the same font was used for labels and branding elements, creating a consistent experience across all touchpoints.
Before finalizing the font choice, I checked the available styles and webfont options. Violet offered several weights and alternates, giving me flexibility in different design scenarios. The commercial license allowed for use across multiple platforms, including the client’s online store, landing pages, and marketing materials. This made it an excellent choice for a scalable brand identity.
Overall, Violet proved to be a versatile and effective font for this project. Its delicate style added a human touch to the digital experience, making the brand feel more relatable and trustworthy. Whether used for headlines, logos, or decorative accents, it enhanced the visual storytelling without compromising functionality.
If you’re looking for a handwritten font that blends charm with practicality, Violet is worth considering. It’s a great option for creative portfolios, coaching websites, product landing pages, or any digital space where authenticity and elegance are key. Just remember to pair it wisely and prioritize readability, especially on smaller screens.
